Import Vs Domestic 1/4 Mile Shootout

well it hasnt happened yet...

but in about two months one of my best friends and i will be having an import vs domestic "best 3 out of 5" quarter mile drag race.
Winner gets to choose what the losers vanity place will say for the next year. and loser pays for the plate.

The contenders are...

Domestic...
1969 Chevrolet Camaro
LT1 engine with T56 6 speed swap
Fiberglass hood and rear seat delete
Upgraded polyuerathane suspension
P245-R17/45 tires all around
Power: approxiamatly 400HP, 420TQ
Weight: 3350, with no driver
Gear Ratio: 3.73, Detroit Locker

Import:
1998 Nissan 240
RB25 and 5 speed swap
Upgraded suspension
Upgraded ECU
12 pounds of boost
Power: 320HP, 310TQ
Weight: 3000, with no driver
Gear Ratio: stock , LSD

so im interested in what u guys think of the race...
It wont happen for atleast two more months til my engine swap is done, but were both really looking foreward to it, lots of smack talk haha.
Who do u think will win, by how much? Why? Who has the advantage and why?

My buddy Phil, the owner of the 240 just joined the site so im sure hell have something to add on here.
yes, we will definitely be videoing it so i can rub my victory in his face. That right Phil!!!!!

But im sure well have a few other friends go to te dragstrip with us so we should have a good amount of races on video.

Well, let's break it down....

Nissan: 320hp and 3000lbs is a power to weight ratio of 9.38 (lbs per hp)

Camaro: 400hp and 3350lbs is a power to weight ratio of 8.38 (lbs per hp)

So far, the Camaro has only slightly less weight to pull than the Nissan, (advantage: Camaro)...
however that advantage of difference in power to weight is probably offset by the fact the Nissan has a 5-speed, which is slightly taller gearing than the 6-speed as well as possibly less shifting (advantage: Nissan)...
When you add in the locking rear end for the Camaro versus the LSD on the Nissan (probably a little less effective in drag racing), the advantage goes back to the Camaro (advantage: Camaro)
The size and diameter of the turbo on the Nissan is unspecified by the info given, so that makes it difficult to gauge how much spool time is needed to reach max boost, obviously the smaller the turbo, the less lag...but I would assume there will have to be some serious brake-boosting off the line to hold the Camaro from the jump, cuz it's tough to beat the immediate torque of the LT1 (advantage: Camaro)


In the end, it really depends on who gets the best launch, who shifts better and who has better traction.

Both cars with equal drivers...the Nissan will probably need a miracle....

... or a little nitrous.

actually my car is lighter than the camaro, so i have the first advantage
if i recall correctly the gearing on the t56(?) is more agressive so the camaro has the second advantage
the lsd on my car is MUCH more effective than the locking rear end on the camaro so i have the third advantage
my car is running a stock turbo maxed out at 14psi, but the lt1 rapes me on wtq and whp camaro has huge advantage.
hopefully before the race i can get a tune and squeeze more power out of it and close the gap a bit.

but the big difference is the tires

i'm running better quality tires, but they're only 205's while he's running decent tires but in a 245. so he has a HUGE advantage
if i can get some real sizes in the rear, it'll be a contest, if not, i'll most likely get blown out of the water.

I know the Camaro weighs more than the Nissan, it's more about power to weight....where the Camaro wins.
That's what I'm talking about.....advantage CAMARO.
8 pounds per hp, compared to 9 pounds per hp for the Nissan.


Secondly, please explain how an LSD is better than a locked rear end for drag racing?


...and yes, you need at least a 245 in the rear to stand a chance.
