2JZ Best engine ever built?

IMO the 2JZ (supra) is the best engine ever built. How many stock bottom ends can honestly handle over 800 whp daily driven? The amount of power it produces and withstands per only 3 liters of displacement is just incredible to me. Who in their right mind would have expected hundreds of inline 6 cylinders would be capable of over 1,000 whp before the 2jz was born? toyota ftw

I'll have to disagree. The Mopar 426 Hemi is hands down the most badass engine ever built. It doesn't take much to control 3 liters of displacement, but when you are grabbing 450 horsepower out of the box in 1970 makes this an incredible engine hands down. I'd like to know what toyota was making in 1970.

Yes, I agree, back in the 70's, you couldn't beat the 426 HEMI for 14-second muscle.

They've made a lot of engines since the 70's.


There's a lot of mean and powerful engines out there, and power doesn't make them the "best."
It's also about efficiency and maximum output per liter of displacement.
Just creating huge power from a pushrod V8 or big block isn't much of a challenge, cuz it's just lots of displacement.
You could argue that the LSX engines are some of the greatest in their own right, because although they are big cube motors, they are lightweight.
There are 2.0L engines putting out nearly 100hp per liter...and guess who makes em?
Honda and Toyota.

Is there a replacement for displacement?
Yeah....it's called forced induction.


Oh...and this is what toyota was making in 1968:

Back then, Toyota wasn't trying to compete on the drag strip with Mopars and Pony cars...
instead they were producing the 2000GT to compete with the likes of the Porsche 911.
Japanese auto makers were not about raw power...they were more interested in building sports cars that could both accelerate and handle well.
Thus, you have the first Japanese sports cars, the Toyota 2000GT and the Datsun 240Z.

But if I wanted an import engine, it'd defiantly be the 2jz..

My personal favorite is the 03-04 terminator cobra engine.

evo and sti also make 150 hp/liter, no? And dodge also had 100 hp/liter car in the early 90's. And technically the srt-4 has a little bit over 100 hp/liter, it really makes 260+ hp at the crank.

ummm, i honestly don't think its all about whp in a car, i think its all about how balanced your car is, from front to end, it takes more knowlege(especially in drifting), more time, and much smarter because putting all that whp to your car is not good for your engine, if they arn't balance out that is, too most people its all about how much my car has whp, but to me, its about how well balanced your engine and car is and would take someone who really knows about engine and car because to be honest, it takes a lot of skill and knowledge, some for my friends took longer than 4months just to get the right parts for his car(we'll he is sort of a perfectionist), hey this is just what i think, doesn't meant everyone has to agree and everyone won't, anything anyone says, at least one person in this world will disagree
also this doesn't mean your car will have only like 200whp, it can still have as much as 400whp and up

Seriously folks, let's remember, this is about the best ENGINE, not car.
The Supra itself, engine aside, is still a very heavy car.

Also, I don't know that I would say the 2JZ is THE best engine ever built.

Let's just say it is probably ONE of the best engines out there.

Among engines that win award after award, the LS1-7, the Nissan VQ engine, the 426 Hemi, the RB series and the 2JZ are ALL great engines.

It is pretty bold to speak in absolutes when talking about what engine is the BEST, because they are all good for different reasons.

So, let's just say, the 2JZ is ONE of the best engines ever built.
Simply put, it was over-engineered from the factory...whether the Toyota engineers did it on purpose or not.
I don't think they planned on people modding the sh!t out of the car back in '93 when it first came out, but since they made it with forged internals from the factory, you gotta think somebody somewhere had a clue what was goin on.

Thats turbocharged. The celica 2zz makes 180hp per 1.8L of displacement Naturally aspirated, and the honda k20 is 200 i think. Anybody can get 100hp per L w/ some type of Forced Induction, but rarely do you see an NA car doing it. In fact are there any domestics that are 100/L stock?

totally agree but this is from an engine standpoint where hp numbers, displacement,overall stock strength, potential, etc. matter the most

Of course d1/nopi or w/e, and all the professional junk is out of our league. But anyone with a rwd car can slide around a corner and "drift."
